I want to be a green mom. Do I have to apply? Is there something I need to do? What make a mom become a green mom? Guess what? Anyone can be some shade of green. Did you know there are over 33 shades of green, so pick one! I get asked this question all the time about where should a mom start. It all seems so confusing and the media and marketing makes it all worse. Who even knows what is natural, organic or non-toxic? Don’t make too much out of it, just start somewhere and decide what will work for your family. I did too much too quickly and it sent my family into a shock of some sort. We’re still adjusting from all my quick changes!
So here’s my five-step process for becoming a green mom:
1. Make a list of the toxic products you use in your home (personal care products, cleaning products, pesticides, dog shampoo, etc.). Pick something to switch out and begin there. Maybe start with using no pesticides and find alternatives. When you’re comfortable with the switch and your families hasn’t gone crazy move on to the next line of toxic products and switch those out.
2. When it comes to the grocery store and shopping use reusable bags. This is the easiest thing to do. For food start buy choosing what your family can afford to do when it comes to hormone free and organic. If organic is too much choose local. Local means fewer pesticides then a industrial farm anyhow. Choose to begin going hormone free for your milk, cheese and meat. Start somewhere, like the milk and then add the cheese and meat. If the cost is too high, call the companies and request coupons. The best way to cut the cost is to stop buying the high priced junk food like soda and cookies.
3. Maybe buying a hybrid isn’t on your to-do-list but could you walk more? Maybe car-pool or drive sparingly?
4. Begin recycling and if you already recycle maybe you could start composting.
5. Save energy and turn off your lights. Do you need the A.C. today? Have you winter proofed your home? Do simple things each day to curb your use of energy and guess what, you’ll save money!
Becoming a “Green Mom” isn’t a title or something you wear on a pin. It is something in your heart. Something you are striving to be each day. A role model for your children and for other moms who are just trying the best. What means the most is for you to start somewhere verses doing nothing.
