Easy Sweet and Sour Chicken

Sweet and sour chicken is a favorite of kids everywhere. This homemade version is simple to make and does not include any of the preservatives or extra fat that you find in fast food dishes. Kids can help cook this simple dish with help from mom and dad.

Ingredients

2 pounds of chicken, cut into small pieces
1 ½ teaspoon Salt
1 ½ tablespoon White Sugar
2 tablespoons of Worcestershire Sauce
4 Tablespoons Flour
1 Tablespoon Cornstarch
1 Tablespoon Olive Oil
1 ½ cup Brown Sugar
¾ Cup of White Wine Vinegar
1 ½ cups of Water
Cornstarch to Thicken

Preparation

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

In a small bowl mix the pieces of chicken with the 2 tablespoons of worcestershire sauce. Stir until the chicken has been coated.

In another bowl mix together the salt, white sugar, flour, and cornstarch. Transfer the chicken to the bowl with the dry ingredients and toss to coat.

In a medium frying pan heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the chicken to the frying pan and fry until it is brown.

In a small pot bring the brown sugar, vinegar, and water to a boil. Carefully scoop out a small portion of the liquid using a ladle and put it into a small bowl. Add 1-2 tablespoons of cornstarch to the bowl and mix with a fork until it has mostly dissolved. Add the cornstarch mixture to the pot and let it boil until thickened. Repeat with additional cornstarch if the mixture does not thicken.

Place the cooked chicken into a small casserole dish and pour the liquid mixture over the chicken. Bake in the oven for 45 minutes. Serve over rice and with a vegetable on the side.
