Hand Washing Tips for Kids in the Kitchen

Teaching kids proper hand washing habits can help prevent the spread of disease and bacteria and help keep them healthy. Hand washing is an important part of safe food preparation and kitchen safety.

Proper hand washing habits can do more for preventing the spread of disease and bacteria in the kitchen than anything else kids can do.

  1. Before touching food, always wash your hands with soap and warm water for at least 30 seconds.
  2. Rub your hands together as you wash your hands to get all the germs off. Be sure and rub between your fingers and around your fingernails to get rid of any germs.
  3. After washing your hands, do not touch your face, clothes, or other objects because they could have germs on it that would get on the food as you cook.
  4. After going to the bathroom, wash your hands twice. Wash your hands once in the bathroom to get the germs off and wash them once in the kitchen sink to get rid of any germs you picked up while touching the sink or door knob in the bathroom.
  5. Always wash your hands after touching raw meat. Raw meat can have bacteria on it that needs to be cooked. Touching food that will not be cooked with hands that have touched raw meat can spread bacteria and make you sick.
