New Moon Girls – A Safe, Creative, Positive World for Girls

newmoonNewMoon.com and New Moon Girls magazine has a transformative vision of girls ages 8 and up. Instead of using media to tell girls who they “should be,” New Moon helps girls discover, create and share media that they and their peers make. The focus is all on what girls have to say about themselves, their lives, and the world. It’s a breath of fresh air compared to other media for girls that tell girls who to be and so shift their editorial focus with the fickle winds of fad, fashion and marketing.

Online and in the magazine girls share their writing, video, art, photos, opinions, advice, polls, etc. and support each other with constructive comments and diverse perspectives. New Moon isn’t driven by ad revenue, like other media. It isn’t MySpace or Facebook which are supposed to be off-limits for those under 13. Unlike those sites, NewMoon.com does not allow posting of personal information and is a safe space for girls on the internet. The site complies with all aspects of the Children’s Online Privacy and Protection Act (COPPA)

Girls love New Moon as just a few of the many unsolicited positive comments they give us show:

I LOVE New Moon because it gets the girls points of view in writing, photos, art and videos! The online world makes it easy for girls to safely share all our poetry, drawings and movies which expands our creativity. We shout and jump to let our voices be heard and New Moon listens!

I feel so safe there. Luna and the moderators look out for me and all the girls. They help us be confident in who we are. New Moon cares about our feelings and opinions. I think it’s important for girls to get the chance to talk to each other and help each other out a lot.

There are many great sections like Dear Luna and Ask A Girl. Everyone is nice to each other. I wish everything was as encouraging and great as New Moon. I feel very lucky to be a member and I am proud of it!

In July, the online will add an innovative new instant messaging feature for members (only usable with parent permission) that gives parents complete and immediate access to transcripts of all chats and the ability to block anyone from their daughter’s “friends” list. Girls will be able to connect to each other online with the added safety net of parental guidance and supervision. Girls develop their writing, artistic, video, and music talents, share their insights, develop critical media skills—all while learning to appreciate their own strengths and abilities. Meanwhile, they learn from the strengths and abilities of other girls—and dozens of inspirational women of yesterday and today.

New Moon is truly education for life, helping girls build self-worth grounded in what’s real and really important—rather than in the superficiality by which girls are so frequently urged to judge themselves and others.
