Pesky biting bugs always seem to know right where to get you or the children. The knuckles, toes, ear, and elbow…all the places that are impossible to scratch and get relief. White, tender fresh skin seem to attract the flying critters. The best thing you can do is where a bug repellant but one without deet and one that works! Is that possible you wonder and why not deet?
Let me tell you plain and simple, deet is a pesticide and unless you would spread a pesticide all over your body and have it’s toxins leak into your blood stream, you should not use it. Did you know it was used for warfare? Yeah, to hurt people but lets put it on our bodies. Craziness! Sounds harsh but its true!
So what are you’re options? Lately my family has been using two different non-toxic kid safe bug repellants. We live where it’s wet, woody and buggy so I can say that these work with confidence.
The first is from Safe Solutions and is distributed by Kid Safe Pest Control. It’s a roll on made from simple natural herbs- rosemary, thyme, and peppermint, quality oils- canola, castor and beeswax. We roll some on and the spread it by rubbing it on our bodies. The smell is pleasant and the bottle is easy to take with us. My son even uses it by himself and this is very helpful.
The second product that we have been using is called Swy Flotter by Kiss my Face. I bought this recently while visiting a local resort and found this in their gift shop. They have a much longer ingredient list but the company promises this product contains no animal ingredients, artificial colors, or unnecessary chemicals and was not tested on animals. It comes in a spray and has little or no scent. We spray it on and rub it to make it go further because it is oily.
The prices are comparable and so too are the sizes. I always try to choose a product that is effective and doesn’t have to have unnecessary ingredients. Oh, and a product that doesn’t contain a pesticide created for jungle warfare is good! Be safe this summer but don’t resort to wearing chemicals and pesticides on your skin!
