Tie Dye Made Easy

Congratulations to mariposa013, the winner of the The Funky Groovy Tie Dye Kit from Jacquard Products!

tiedyeSummer is the perfect time to participate in art projects that you wouldn’t have time to enjoy with your kids during the school year. I love to get my kids away from the T.V. and encourage them to be creative with open-ended art projects and crafts for kids, but I’m not generally a craft person so I appreciate anything that gives me a little help. The Funky Groovy Tie Dye Kit from Jacquard Products was a perfect way to bring out my kids artistic side.

The Funky Groovy Tie Dye kit comes with everything you need to complete up to 5 tie dye shirts except for the shirts themselves. I found a few cheap white shirts for my kids and invited the neighbors over for a backyard tie dye party. I expected a huge mess and rainbow colored children but I was shocked at how clean and simple the process really was. It has been years since I tie dyed anything and that was in a structured summer program so I wasn’t quite sure what I was getting myself into.

The instructions that came with the Funky Groovy Tie Dye kit were extremely easy to follow and offered fun images depicting the entire process so even my pre-readers could follow along. We started by rinsing our white shirts in the kitchen sink. We had planned to use the hose outside but after seeing how simple it really was we opted to start our tie dye projects inside. After getting our shirts wet, we each chose a different tie dye pattern from the options illustrated in the kit. My 3 year old needed a bit of help getting the rubber bands onto his shirt but my 6 year old did just fine on his own. The kit came with three bottles filled with dye powder. We filled them up with water from the kitchen sink and shook them to mix the dye.

Tie Dye Made EasyWe moved outside for the actual dying of the shirts. We sat on the grass and covered our legs with paper towels to protect our clothes and skin. I expected a lot of stress giving my kids dye to work with but the whole process was actually quite relaxing. We enjoyed sitting in the sun and took turns with the bottles of dye. The kit came with one pair of gloves. If you have any extra latex gloves around they would probably come in handy so each child can use his own pair but one pair of gloves worked fine. Once the shirts were dyed we put them in plastic shopping bags and let them sit for 24 hours. After the 24 hours was up, we rinsed the shirts in the kitchen sink and then put them through the washing machine. The colors came out brilliantly and my kids are thrilled with their shirts. Making tie dye shirts together will be a wonderful summer memory for my kids and they are so proud of the end results.
