What is Frugal Living?

being_frugal1Many people cringe when they hear the word “frugal”. It brings to mind cheap products that don’t last long and going without the things you want. The reality is, frugal living has less to do with the size of your bank account and more to do with a desire to use our resources wisely and avoid being wasteful with the things that we have been given.

Frugal living does not have to mean being deprived of the things that you want. Our world is filled with things that tell us we need more and we are not enough unless we have lots of stuff. Our lives are not measured by who has the biggest pile of stuff at the end of the road. Carefully using the things that we have is not doing without. It is being a wise steward of the earth.

Children playing are easily overwhelmed by too many toys. They are easily frustrated and go from one toy to the next, unable to decide what to play with. Watch a child that is given only a few simple toys and you will see a child that is absorbed in their own play, creating a world with wooden blocks and works of art with a crayon.

We are very similar to a child in this aspect. If we are surrounded by an excess of things, we do not really use any of them. We fall into the trap of constantly wanting more and never feeling like the things we already have are enough. We can break this cycle by training ourselves to buy a few needed and well loved items that we will really be able to use because we are not so overwhelmed by the stuff in our lives.

We become easily frustrated when we have too much stuff and do not use any of our things to the degree that we intended to. By living frugally, we can release ourselves from the stress of debt and overspending and really have the time to enjoy what we have.
