Finding a Gym that’s right for you

DumbbellsLet’s face it – if you are going to have an overall healthy level of fitness you are going to need to have access to some sort of fitness equipment. There are lots of gyms in all sorts of places. I am going to outline the pros and cons of each in hopes of helping you figure out which is best for you.

Type of Gym Pros Cons
Big Chain Gym (ie Gold’s Gym, Bally Total Fitness, etc)
  • State of the Art equipment
  • Lots of variety: in both equipment and classes/services offered
  • Membership in one gym is usually membership in all gyms nationwide
  • Many are open  24 hours/7 days
  • Most offer Child Care
  • May offer fitness classes for children.
  • Personal attention is either non-existent or very expensive
  • If you do not like something, there is little chance of changing it
  • May be a high level of pressure to achieve some “ideal” that is not what you have in mind.
Local Gym
  • Classes/Services are geared towards local standards instead of national standards.
  • Often receive a more personal level of service
  • Hours may be limited
  • Membership is limited to that gym
  • Equipment may be slightly older
Woman-Only Gym
  • Intimidation-free zone
  • Employees are centered on Woman’s needs
  • Most offer Child care
  • Often very limited/structured options
  • Many have very limited hours (not even open all day)
Home Gym
  • You create the hours
  • No one else to feel self-conscious around
  • No need for child care
  • Equipment can get expensive
  • Requires a higher level of dedication
  • Lots of distractions (kids, chores, phone/computer)
  • No outside advice
Recreation Centers (in housing groups, at work, hospital, rec department)
  • Convenient location
  • Often less expensive and/or a free perk of your job or home
  • May have child classes that can be taken while you exercise.
  • Hours may be limited
  • May not offer Child care
  • Usually lack trainers or other guidance

Whichever option you choose to go with commitment is going to be a huge factor. Several studies over the years have determined that you are much more likely to stick to a routine at a gym away from home than one in your home.  Also variety is a huge issue when it comes to exercise. If you are doing the same exact workout day in and day out it will get very old very fast. It is important to try something new every once in a while, especially if the current plan has become “easy”. You have to continue to push yourself to have a continued level of health.
