It’s that time of year again! No we’re not getting ready to pull out the Thanksgiving decorations. People all over the world are stepping up to the challenge to write a novel during the month of November as part of National Novel Writing Month. Participants start writing their novel from scratch on November 1st and aim to complete a 50,000 novel by midnight on November 30th.
It sounds like a lofty goal doesn’t it? For seasoned and beginning writers alike, NaNo WriMo is a great opportunity to squash the little perfectionist that lives in all of us and allow yourself to jump in with both feet to complete a goal. So many moms have great stories to tell but no time to sit and write them down. NaNo WriMo forces you to stop waiting until you get some “free time” because we all know that if you do that, you are going to be waiting forever.
I’ve participated in NaNo WriMo before but never finished. Both times I have started I let perfectionism get the best of me and got caught up editing instead of just adding to my word count – which is really the purpose of NaNo WriMo. So who cares if you write a ridiculous story that starts out as a drama and ends up as a farce. Who cares if you don’t dot your i’s and you have sentences that run on for pages. NaNo WriMo gives you permission to let go of all your hang ups and just write.
So who else out there is participating in NaNo WriMo?

WOW — you have attempted this?? Rachel, that is soooo impressive. I have been struggling for years over a dissertation; the idea of a novel blows me away! Do the entries get reviewed? Is this something that women mostly do? I can’t believe I’ve never heard of it. So cool! Keep us posted on your writing!
