Awkward Moments in Parenting
I’m not a fan of Vegas. It just isn’t my thing. I don’t drink. I don’t gamble. What’s left in the city for me isn’t very entertaining, especially when you have 3 very active little boys in tow. When I was younger I used to enjoy visiting the city to see the lights and the attractions in each casino. As an adult it’s easy to overlook the things that you don’t want to see. Kids are sponges though. They see everything and they have no problem asking loud questions about it while you are walking down the strip. Since having kids, we’ve tried to avoid walking down the strip or visiting the main parts of the casinos. We’re in town right now for CES and as my husband heads out to learn about all the newest electronic gadgets (aka heaven), I’m trying to find a way to homeschool in a Vegas hotel room and entertain 3 kids on my own.
The last time we were in Las Vegas for CES we had an interesting experience that really made us think twice about exploring the city with kids. We decided to explore a few casinos after CES. We thought we were being smart by staying in the shopping area. As we walked, we noticed someone walking around with several video cameras following and a crowd of what appeared to be fans trying to get a glimpse. We figured he must be someone famous but since we didn’t recognize him we moved on. When we made it to the main part of the shopping area, we saw several other groups of someone-who-must-have-been-famous and a crowd of fans. The must-be-famous people began to stand up on small pedestals in the random places.
The further we walked into the casino, the more crowded it got and the more convinced we were that something was going on, but we had no idea what. We started to get some strange looks as we pushed our stroller through the casino but we figured that generally happened whenever we took kids to Vegas so we ignored it. Finally, a kind porn addict person clued us in. He came up and said “You may want to get the kids out of here. In about 5 minutes everyone in here is going to start taking off their clothes”.
I guess at the same time CES was going on, there was another type of convention of a more adult nature. We scrambled to find the first exit and got out of there as fast as we could. During this trip to Vegas, we’re limiting the kids to the hotel and some much more kid friendly places away from the strip.
