Something special came in the mail today – 10 tiny caterpillars that will soon become beautiful painted lady butterflies. I opened a home daycare and preschool shortly after my oldest son was born and we loved doing the Insect Lore butterfly kits every year. When I visited the Insect Lore booth at Toy Fair this year, I was ashamed to realize that I had never done an Insect Lore kit with any of my own kids – at least when they were old enough to remember it.
I remember raising butterflies in elementary school when I was a kid and unfortunately, most of the schools don’t do any hands-on science projects at all anymore, which is really sad since that was definitely one of the highlights of my early school years.
Over the next 3 weeks, these tiny little caterpillars will go through their entire life cycle, and my children are ready to watch every stop. We’ll document our journey for you to follow along with on Busy Mommy Media and keep an eye out for an exciting giveaway from Insect Lore so you can raise your own butterflies.
Now that we have our caterpillars, they need names – all 10 of them. My 4 year old put in one vote for “caterpillar”. My 6 year old came up with 2 names – “cater” and “pillar”. Hmmm. We may need to work on our creativity.
Do you have any name suggestions for the Busy Mommy Media caterpillars?

Your kids are very lucky to be able to see those caterpillars turn into butterflies.
It’s great to be able to see things for yourself, rather than just read about them in books.
It’s too bad that many schools don’t have the resources to provide children with these opportunities.
I’m still waiting for my caterpillars to come. I sent my order out in March, they were supposed to come the first week of april. My check was cashed, and yet no caterpillars. I get no answer when I call their telephone number on their website. Where do you order from? Could you please answer me back by email. Thanks!
Hey, thank you so much for the contact with insect lore. I realized, they did NOT cash my check, my order must have been lost in the mail. I submitted a new order online. (without the original coupon code, unfortunately) But again, thank you…we should be getting caterpillars within a week or so!
Thanks to Rachel here who forwarded your comment our way! We try to keep our eyes and ears open and follow up when things go awry. I’m just relieved that we found out. Now, onward and upward … time to win some more butterflies in the busymommy giveaway!
