As we celebrate Memorial Day today, I’m grateful the the people who have fought to keep our country safe. I don’t personally come from a military family but my dad is currently in Iraq as a contractor so my family owes a lot to the men and women who play a direct role in his safety. It is easy to forget about the sacrifices that are being made on our behalf everyday so that we can live in relative peace and comfort. Author Annette Lyon gives us a glimpse into the lives of 5 women who have husbands deployed in Afghanistan in her new book, Band of Sisters.
I had the chance to read Band of Sisters a few weeks ago and I couldn’t put it down. The stories of the women were so inspiring as they overcame things that most of us don’t ever have to think of. I can’t imagine how hard it must be to go through a deployment but I really felt like I had taken a peek into the lives of these women and come to understand, at least a little more than I did before, what they have sacrificed to keep our country safe. Band of Sisters is emotionally charged from the first page and it is easy to see parts of yourself in each woman as she faces the very real challenges that come with having a husband deployed.
Annette blogs at The Lyon’s Tale and is a self-proclaimed word nerd. We’re thrilled to have the chance to chat with Annette during this week’s #MomStorm party. We’re talking about her new book, Band of Sisters, and brainstorming ways you can help support military families.
About Band of Sisters
When the war on terror calls their husbands to duty, five LDS women are left behind to fight battles of their own: Kim, newlywed and pregnant, frightened of what the future might bring. Brenda, struggling to manage three unruly boys and a crippling bout of depression. Jessie, secretly grappling with mixed feelings about her crumbling marriage. Marianne, wrestling with a rebellious teenage daughter. And Nora, the seasoned Army wife with perfect hair, an immaculate home—and an ill-tempered mother dying of cancer.
Knowing the separation of deployment is extremely difficult, Nora gathers the wives every week to share lunches and burdens. In good company, they worry over safety in the field and stability at home and offer one another counsel and comfort.
But as their personal crises build, each woman faces the risks of forming deep bonds of trust. And when tragedy strikes, they must confront the painful realities of war that pull families apart and bring friends together as sisters. – Read More
