Friday Faves Back-to-School Edition

Since Rachel is on her way to BlogHer (and I am hiding my green envy filled eyes behind my shades), she has asked me to put together this week’s Friday Faves post. Because of course we wouldn’t want you to miss out on all the exciting information that is floating around the blogsphere. Something that is fresh on my mind is heading to school in just a few weeks. My oldest is about to start Kindergarten so this is my first time experiencing the “Back-to-School” rush. Since I am a knowledge consumer I have been scouring the blogs to finds tips on how to make this a smooth transition. I know that these are supposed to be current blog entries, but since this is an on-going, every year, “event” some of the articles are from years past, but still totally useful.

Transition Help

Back-To-School Tips on MomSpark:  This is a great list of Do’s and Don’ts when it comes to getting read for the school year. What I really like is that it is not only from the perspective of a mom but she is also a former elementary school teacher. This isn’t a list of school supplies at all, it is a list of important things to keep in mind and to actively to make your children’s educational experience worth while.

Back-to-School Tips: Help Kids Avoid Back-to-School Shock on Today’s Mama: I found this article very informative. We always talk about transition and making routine changes easier for our infants, but it seems that we sort of forget about the smaller changes that take place with each passing season. Today’s Mama really gives some insight and interesting concepts on how to make the change from summer time to the classroom go smoothly.

Back-To-School Tips on SchoolFamily: Connie brings up some more ideas of how to transition kids from their summer routine into school routines, specifically focusing on the new morning routine.

Shopping Tips

Of course I couldn’t leave a Back-to-School themed post without some great shopping tips. We will all have to make that trip down the school supplies aisle at least once this year. And it can be very overwhelming. It is important to separate the wants from the needs. If you are on a tight budget, rest assured that your child will survive with a plain read binder instead of the newest Alice in Wonderland style.

6 Back to School Shopping Tips on Kim’s Shopping Blog: Kim breaks things down into a carefully planned buying schedule. She points things to get as soon as they hit the shelves and things that you can wait until after the first week of school, and they are on sale! Another great tip she includes is purchasing all the school items separately from your regular schooling so you can easily and accurately keep track of your spending and stay on budget.

5 Ways to Keep Your Back to School Spending in Check on Suddenly Frugal: Leah points out some important hidden concepts of school shopping. For example, she reminds us that kids grow very quickly – no matter what age – and to keep this in the back of your head when buying the new clothes/shoes. And to keep your receipts – because many schools offer price adjustments within a few weeks so if it goes on sale you can get some of your purchase price back.
