This time of year, I really start missing our time living near the beach in San Diego. There’s only one thing that I will never miss – the ants. I couldn’t believe the ants.
I once left a birthday cake covered in plastic wrap on my kitchen counter and the next morning the white icing had turned black. It was completely covered in ants. Appetizing, right?
I was told by someone who used to work pest control during college that ants are actually some of the hardest pests to kill. No matter what you do, they just seem to keep coming back. I’m all for natural options whenever possible but nothing I tried worked at all. Ants leave scent trails to communicate with other ants when they find food so one stray crumb and you’ve got a major problem on your hand.
Since our move back to Utah, we’ve been relieved that we had a mild winter, but that’s going to come with some negative side effects. Because the soil never froze, many pests never died. With a newborn in the house, there is nothing that creeps me out more than having to deal with household pests so I will be throwing everything I have at them.
Amdro Ant Block Home Perimeter Ant Bait can actually create a barrier around your home and work to kill ant colonies. I wish I’d given it a try during our time in San Diego. It probably would have saved me a lot of frustration over our ant problem.

lots of off spray!
We usually spray around the house because carpenter ants make incursions in on the really hot days. Inside the house, I usually like to spray some cedar oil around as a precaution (and because it smells pretty good).
We call the exterminator.
I use bug repellents on me and my house
I put ant traps along the house

It is a constant battle to get rid of pest. We have tried many different products..with some success. I am always looking for a product that works every time.
This year, actually it is ants. They suddenly appeared in droves. It’s horrible.
Lots of Raid.
I use sprays and ant bait.
I try to yell at them, but that doesn’t work. We try to use enviromentally safe products, or natural remedies.

Good screens and ant bait
Ants don’t like cinnamon. If I find that ants have discovered a way in, I generally block it off and sprinkle cinnamon around that spot outside. By the time the weather removes the cinnamon, the ants have abandoned that spot. It takes constant vigilance though. I don’t like to use any chemical treatments because of my pets, I’m afraid their curious noses will be in it and they’ll get sick.
I use bug repellent sprays
use bug spray
I usually have a company come out and spray
My husband is the official “exterminator” in our house. He uses a granular type pesticide for the ants on our back patio.
we use bug spray
We try and use chemical free pesticides. Mostly we just make sure the house is very clean and free of food crumbs. If an ant trail is found, I use borax to deter the ants from entering at the same spot.
Ant bait in plastic containers is how we get rid of the ants that come ever year.
I usually use the indoor and outdoor raid any spray
I like to use Diatomaceous earth
I set ant trips on the entrances to my kitchen as this is the first point of entry.
Once it starts to get dark out, we shut the doors and windows to keep the mosquitoes out, then use lots of Off!
I spray them with anything I have in my hand (Pam, windex, perfume), stomp on them, throw things at them. Obviously, I need to rethink this:)
