We’re playing it old school for summer around our house this year. We’ll be sharing more of what we have planned later this week). We’ve shut off the T.V. and packed away the video games. No use wasting all this great weather being plugged in.
Since we homeschool, we don’t have a clearcut beginning of summer but I like to add a few new entertainment options to get my kids excited about the possibilities that summer offers.
Target is one of our go-to places for affordable summer fun and this year they have some great options for keeping your kids actively engaged and away from the T.V.
Kid Made Modern Board Book Kit
With a new baby in the house, we’ve been spending a bit too much time at home. In order to keep my kids from killing each other, trashing the house, or both, I’ve had to find a way to keep them entertained at home.
The Kid Made Modern Board Book Kit from Target was the perfect way to keep them occupied while allowing them to make something for their new baby sister and at only $14.99 is a great deal. The kit came with 3 board books – convenient since I have 3 boys. My art-loving 6 year old immediately set to work.
He spent hours working on his book and ended up recreating The Avengers movie. When he was done, he told me that he did such a good job that he decided he should probably keep it instead of giving it to his sister. I’m not sure she’d fully appreciate all the super hero drawings for a while anyway but the project definitely sparked his interest in book making. I suspect we’ll see several more pop out over the course of the summer.
Kid Made Modern Duct Tape Kit
Duct tape can be used for just about anything, including some great craft projects like the ones included in the Kid Made Modern Duct Tape Kit. My almost 9 year old is getting too old for the preschool art where my own skills max out but he still loves to make things. This kit was perfect for keeping him entertained and included some practice following directions as he worked his way through the duct tape wallet project.
This series includes several different sets and I suspect that my kids will be begging me to take them to Target to stock up on a few others as soon as they’ve completely finished this one.
Giant Badminton Set
Badminton doesn’t seem to be played often anymore but during high school PE, it was the one activity I didn’t fake an injury to get out of. Since the game moves a bit slower than tennis or other similar sports, it’s perfect for kids and great for backyard fun during the summer.
My kids had never heard of badminton before but they were discovered that it was a blast and they’ve enjoyed hours of play in our backyard with the Giant Badminton Set from Target. With a price of only $7.99, it’s a perfect frugal entertainment option for this summer.
Lemonade Stand
Whoever thought of neighborhood lemonade stands is a genius. What a great way to teach kids about the basics of running a business and simple math skills!
A lemonade stand has been on our to-do list all summer but so far the demands of a new baby have kept us from following through with it. Target has some great, affordable accessories that can help make your lemonade stand a hit.
- Lemonade Stand Banner – $2.00
- Lemonade Stand Money Box – $3.00
- Lemonade Stand Sign – $4.00
- Lemonade Stand Juice Container – $6.00
- Lemonade Stand Ice Bucket – $6.00
Be sure and check out Target’s “Summer-izer” Facebook application on Facebook.com/Target. This application allows you to add “Big Honkin’ Summer” icons to photos, and then share online or print at a local Target Photo Center.
I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Target and received products to facilitate my review and thank me for taking the time to participate.
