Would you Pierce your Baby’s Ears?

Pierced ears on a baby

Join me over at the Right Start blog as I try and figure out whether or not I should pierce my baby girl’s ears.

We’ve been a family of boys for a long time but from the time I was pregnant with my oldest son, my husband and I always talked about how cute little girls look with pierced ears.

It was a frequent topic of conversation . . . hypothetical of course since our boys weren’t likely to want their ears pierced anytime soon so we loosely decided that if we ever had a girl we would pierce her ears.

I had settled into the role of a mother of boys pretty firmly when my daughter was born. When she was only days old, my husband asked, “So, when do we get to pierce her ears?”

And I couldn’t do it.

  1. After two boys, we had an girl and our life changed. Like you, I was unsure when to do it. However, when I was pregnant, I dreamed seeing my baby girl with little earrings soon after birth. After she was born, dh wanted it done too, but I was on the fence after seeing her precious, tiny, perfect ears. I just couldn’t do it.The idea of piercing this beautiful little babies ears all of the sudden seemed like something I could NOT do. How could I hurt my little baby? However, after seeing more and more babies and little girls with cute little earrings, I began warming up to the idea of doing it as an infant. I guess somewhere along the way I became one of those mamas who became all googly-eyed over other babies who had pierced ears saying how adorable they were.

So I would ask the Mom how it went and would she do it again. Do you know what? I got the same answer from all of them. A resounding, yes! Yes, they would do it again and they are really happy with it. When I asked Moms who waited until their daughters were older (almost all) said they wished they had done it when their daughter was smaller. The problem is when you wait until the child is older the child will mess with it and it inevitably gets infected. I’m not saying that this will happen all the time, it’s just what I have personally been told by friends (other Moms who I trust and I know love their children as much as I love mine). So I made the choice for my daughter and I hope she will thank me when she gets older.

Still unsure, I asked our ped who said earlier was best and gave me some tips for finding the right person and place to have it done. We had it done and daddy loves them! Did I say she looks adorable with little gold studs in her little ears?
