I’m terrible about going to the doctor. Sure, if my kids are sick I’ll take them in but if I’m sick it needs to be closer to life and death before I’ll make the time to go in for a doctor’s visit. It just takes so much time. By the time I drop my kids off at the babysitter’s house, drive to the doctor’s office, wait in the waiting room, then see the doctor, half my day is gone. I never realized how much I liked sleep until I became a mom. My oldest son turns 12 this month and I’m not sure I’ve had a really good night’s sleep since before he was born. When I had twins last year my definition of sleep deprivation went to an whole new level.
Getting a full night’s sleep is essential though. I’m making more of an effort to prioritize my sleep and after getting 2 nearly full night’s sleep in a row I feel like I’m coming out of a fog. Being sleep deprived can mess with your immune function, memory, and other vital functions that keep you going (and as moms, we need all the help we can get to keep going).
Becoming a parent is a huge life change, whether it’s your first baby or your sixth, and there’s a lot of factors that come into play when preparing for a pregnancy. Life has a way of throwing some curveballs our way but pregnancy (and parenthood) definitely goes a bit smoother if you can prepare for it beforehand.
I’ve had 7 pregnancies (rough ones) and if I could go back there are definitely a few things I’d tell myself to do before pregnancy.
