Are you thinking about a remodel but are worried your design skills aren’t up to the task?
Remodeling can be overwhelming, especially if you aren’t a natural designer but there are ways to simplify the process and help you create your dream home.
Find examples of home designs you love
Going through a remodel when you aren’t a designer means you have to do a bit of research before you get started. Spend some time determining what style you like best. Look at photos of home designs and make note of the ones you love. Don’t be afraid to pick and choose elements from different designs. If possible, visit homes so you can see designs in person and take photos of things you love.
Once you have a clear idea of what you are looking for, it is easier to customize your home remodel to your own taste.
Consider whether you need a full remodel or a touch up
If you want a change, the first step is to evaluate how drastic of a change you are looking for. You can do a lot with a quick remodeling touch up. Changing out appliances, cheaply refinishing cabinets, and adding some home decor can give you a bold new look without the work (and expense) of a full remodel so it is definitely something to consider before you get started.
Choose appliances that complement your design
Appliances are not just functional anymore. They have a style all their own and there are some great options out there that fit with the flow of your home design and complement the style you are going for.
My family moved recently and with that move came the need for a few new appliances. We definitely asked around for recommendations about what appliances were the most functional, but style was a big consideration too.
For function, we went straight to the source — the appliance repair guys. Every single one of them said go with something by the Whirlpool Corporation. We ended up going with appliances from Kitchen Aid, one of the names in Whirlpool’s portfolio of brands and we have been loving our new appliances. Kitchen Aid is the way to go if you are passionate about cooking. Their products have high end performance with great style.
Look for appliance color finishes and textures that make then feel more like part of the home. I love the KitchenAid black stainless finish and the way it seamlessly blends with the rest of the home.
Consider current trends
Trends do come and go so you don’t want to choose a style that is on it’s way out but you also want your home to have a current feel to it. Do a bit of research on current trends and make sure you find something that you will still like even if the next trend pushes that style out of the spotlight.
Current trends include an open kitchen design with the color finishes, textures and quiet appliances needed to promote quietness and harmony within the home
Ask for a second opinion
I’m always surprised at what asking for a friend’s opinion will do to help me make a big decision. More often than not, they will point out things that didn’t stand out to me and I’m always glad to catch those things before I do something permanent.
Be careful not to let your friend’s and family determine the style you choose but definitely take their insights into consideration.
