Summer is just around the corner and hopefully that means some summer travel plans are in your future. Unfortunately, many summer travel plans can end in tragedy if proper safety precautions are not taken.

Diono, formerly Sunshine Kids Juvenile Products, is a world leader in car seat safety and they are joining us to share some great tips to help you have a safe summer travel season. From how to ensure your car seat is installed correctly to when should you move your child from a 5-point harness to a booster, Diono’s car seat safety experts have the answers for you.

Before heading out on a road trip, one of the most important things you can do is to be sure your kids are riding in the right car seat or booster for their size and weight and be sure that those seats are installed correctly.

Diono makes the well-known Radian car seat, a steel-reinforced folding car seat that is one of the narrowest on the market. If you need to fit 3 car seats across in your car, the Radian is the one to do it with. We shocked our friends and family by putting 3 Sunshine Kids Radians in the back seat of the 100% Electric Nissan LEAF in December 2010 and our kids have been riding comfortable that way ever since.

With the American Academy of Pediatrics now recommending that kids stay rear facing until age 2 (or until they reach the maximum height and weight for their seat) the Radian is a great choice. With the ability to keep kids rear facing until 45 pounds, it’s the highest rear facing capacity available.

Booster seats are recommended until a child is 4 feet 9 inches tall and between the ages of 8-12. I’ve heard many parents complain that this is excessive. I have an almost 9 year old who still happily rides in a booster and he has no plans of stopping anytime soon. Seat belts are designed to protect adults, and my son does not pass the 5-point test to move out of a booster. Diono has a great option for older kids who still need a booster but want something that looks a bit more grown up. The Monterey can be used for kids up to 120 pounds and 63 inches tall. My kids have worn pediped shoes since they were teeny tiny and we had a bit of a crisis moment when my 8 year old hit the top end of the sizes that pediped carries and refused to wear any other brand.

He’d been wearing his current shoes for over a year and a half and, as little boys tend to do, had worn the shoes to within an inch of their lives. We tried going shoe shopping but he refused every pair he saw.

Pediped recently came out with new larger sizes and saved my son from going barefoot for the next year. He’s thrilled to death that he can wear his favorite shoe style a bit longer, and as a mom, I love the fact that pediped shoes have been designed to be developmentally appropriate for a child’s feet.

The Super Bowl is coming up on February 5th and it’s a great opportunity to get together with family and friends to enjoy some rare downtime. As 2011 draws to a close, the Hunter PR team has released their 9th annual Food Survey. The survey polled 1000 Americans to determine what the most closely watched food stories of the year were. There was quite a bit of news coverage on the topic of food this year and it’s really interesting to see which stories made the cut.

Safety is a top concern for many Americans. The survey showed that 45% of Americans who were influenced by a food story in the news decided to prepare more of their meals at home. Considering the top food story of 2011 was the 29 deaths caused by Listeria contaminated cantaloupe, that isn’t surprising!

As a parent, I try and keep up with current news stories that may be relevant to my family. It’s essential to stay up to date on food recalls, and we had quite a few of those during 2011. There are few things I enjoy more than getting lost in a really great book and as a parent I want my children to have access to all the wonders that books can provide them with. Learning to read well will do more to influence future success in school and in life than just about anything else so it’s so important to help kids learn to love reading early on.

We’ve always tried to make early literacy a priority in our home and it’s been such a joy to watch my children as they learn now only how to read, but discover the world that books open up to them.

Sometimes though, we all need a little creative inspiration when it comes to finding fun ways to promote literacy. Most of us have our tried and true favorites — we love writing letters in shaving cream and making the letters of the alphabet out of salt dough.

I always love finding new favorites though so we’re teaming up with Rusty and Rosy, an educational software company specializing in early reading skills, to have a night filled with fun ways to get your kids excited about reading.

What is Rusty and Rosy

Rusty and Rosy is an educational computer program that has been used for years within the schools and it’s now available to consumers. My 3 year old and 5 year old sons have been using it for the last few months and they’ve loved it.

The program is adaptive so as kids play it is constantly evaluating what they understand so it can provide them with activities that will continue to challenge them. It was really neat seeing this in action. Both my kids started the program at the beginning and the software quickly adapted to fit their unique needs. My 3 year old is now working on the letters of the alphabet and how to spell his name while my 5 year old is working on phonics and sight words.

I know that many of you are passionate about early literacy and have some great experience, both professionally and personally, helping children learn how to read. I have to admit that I’m kind of in denial that summer is nearing an end already. Ready or not, school supplies are popping up at every store I set foot in and our not so lazy summer days are coming to an end.

As much as I love the start of a new school year, managing the new demands on everyone’s schedules comes with it’s own set of challenges. How do you get everyone out the door with matching socks?

I don’t know about you, but my entire day seems to go better when I start the morning off well. Frantically running around looking for shoes and eating breakfast in the car does little to create the sense of calm that I aim for.
