It may sound strange but lots of people forget their body is a living, breathing, growing and changing entity that really does function independently from our minds. No matter how hard you try, you cannot convince your body to burn more fat or convert your food into energy more quickly. True certain actions and decisions our minds make will have a “default” effect on our body but for the most part our body works they it was designed give the environment it is in. And because of that, you need to learn how to “listen” when you body is trying to tell you something. And I mean really listen – for the whispers and not just the “screaming at the top of its lungs” screams for your attention.

How Does Your Body Communicate With You?

Our body has regular routines – from our bowels and menstruations to how our body changes with the seasons. When something is not quite right without our cells, you probably got a notice when those cells noticed, but overlooked it. If you have lived your life with your period being “like clockwork” – or maybe you have a morning BM everyday – and then one day it’s all wrong, your body is talking! This also goes for the twinges of pain that you sporadically experience. If one day you decide it’s a great idea to help your neighbor offload a washing machine from his truck and your back screams in pain, this means you body is telling you that you need to be more careful. Either you are lifting more than your body can manage, or you need to be taking better care of the body you have.

Do All The Little “Comments” Add Up to Something Bigger?

Many people will wait a day or two before taking action – which usually is fine. It might be a little germ that your body is working out or something you ate that isn’t agreeing with you. However, if you have minor issues on a regular basis, it might be the sign of something major. If you realize that every time you eat a certain food, you end in the bathroom the next day, you might have a food sensitivity – not quite an allergy, but still no fun. Or maybe if you are getting cramps in your calves in the middle of the night, your body is trying to tell you that you need more potassium. It’s all a judgment call, but if you take the time to consider what your body might be saying to you, you might be able to fix things before they get too far.

Every year a majority of us vow to have a healthier existence in the coming year. But this is such a vague notion, that many of us falls short.

Here are ten smaller tasks that you can take on that will result in an overall healthier lifestyle.

1. Cut out the processed foods. Many busy moms tend to rely on pre-cooked, pre-portioned food items to make life easier. But what you usually get along with the convenience is a lot of preservatives, salt and other unneeded and unhealthy additives that your family just doesn’t need. This can even be true of items that you think are healthy – like pre-sliced fruits or pre-packaged salad mixes. These items are often “treated” with something to help them from browning.

2. Lower the amount of chemicals in your home. This can be done by using all-natural cleaners (dish soaps, laundry soaps, body soaps, etc.).

3. Start your new calendar with a block of exercise written in at least three days a week. This will force you to schedule around it and thus leaving time to actually exercise. Probably the most common reason moms give for not getting enough exercise is not having the time.

4. Do not say “I am going to lose 50 pounds this year” say “I am going to lose 5 pounds a month this year”. This is a much more attainable goal and also easier to maintain. If you lose large amounts of weight in a short period of time you are much more likely to gain it back. By spreading it out, you are more likely to have a lasting effect.

5. Drink a glass of water before every meal. This not only helps you to “fill up” faster, it helps you to keep your body working like a well lubricated machine. Water also quenches your thirst much better than soda or juice and has zero calories.

6. Start a food diary on January 1st (or 2nd if you have a large meal on New Year’s Day . When you write down everything that you eat in a day, you will really start to see where all your calories are coming from. Also the idea of having to write down that handful of gummy bears can be a great deterrent in deciding not to eat them.

7. Make it a goal for the whole family to get into better shape! While it’s important not to stress the number on the scale to children (especially teens) you can focus on just having a healthier lifestyle by staying active and eating better.

8. Get everyone into get a full physical in January. This is the perfect time to get a baseline for your body’s workings while you are “healthy”. We often only visit the doctor when we are sick and so they never have an idea of your norms. This is also a chance to catch any underlying issues that might be what is preventing you from losing those pounds – like a thyroid issue – or other decreased efficiency issues. By full physical I mean blood work, and stress tests as well as dental and vision checks.

9. Sit down and consider your goals for the year. Are you planning to get out of debt? Are you planning to try to have a baby? Will you be sending a child off to college? All of these things can result in added stress, which can have a negative effect on your body. You will want to plan ahead and think of ways to reduce those stress levels.

10. Remember that Life is to be lived not survived. While you are trying to have a healthier lifestyle remember to keep doing the things that makes your family a unit and happy. You don’t just throw away family pizza night, but rather change it to salad and pizza or pizza with whole wheat crust and more veggies. Making drastic changes will send you on the fast track to failure.

Whether it’s a sports injury or just an accident while playing around, there are some keys to making a broken bone more manageable. One of the most important things to do is not to have an overly dramatic response to it.

Your child looks to you for guidance in unfamiliar situations – and not just your words but your actions – so maintain a positive and reassuring attitude while staying realistic about what lies ahead will do wonders for your child. Here are some more things you should know when dealing with a broken bone and the subsequent casting process:

At The Time of the Break

If they have broken skin in addition to the broken bone, try to move the limb as little as possible and get them to the emergency room as soon as possible.

If they have rapid swelling – especially around a joint – they need medical attention immediately. Swelling can cause a break that didn’t separate to separate after the fact.

If you are simply unsure if it’s broken – as some kids make it hard to gauge how much it really hurts – take them home for a hour and observe them. If they are protecting the limb and/or not using it, even when they think you are not looking, take them in for x-rays. It’s better to be safe than sorry. An untreated break can mean more pain later when it essentially has to be “re-broken” to properly set it.

During the Medical Intervention

You have to pay close attention to what the doctor is telling you regarding the break. There are lots of different types of break – hairline fractures, compound fractures – and each require different treatment from simple casting to surgery to pin the bone back together.

Ask your doctor how the break relates to your child’s growth plates (these are the parts of a child’s bone that allows for the growth in stature by producing new bone and providing a place for the growth to stem from and be evenly distributed). This will determine the long term impact of how this break will affect your child.

Make sure that your child is paying attention as best they can for their age level as well. They need to know what is and isn’t okay and often times being told by the doctor will have more impact on them.

Caring for a Cast

Your top priority when caring for a cast is keeping it clean and DRY! The cast must stay just as it is molded by the technician in order to aid the healing process. If it gets wet it may “reshape” itself and cause more harm than good. Additionally if moisture gets into it can start to mold and/or bring infection to the skin underneath. This means wrapping it in plastic for bathing, keeping it out of the rain and away from pools and lakes.

Never ever under any circumstances stick anything down the cast – for play, to relieve an itch or anything else! If the skin is scratched but you don’t see the injury, it can become infected and maybe even abscess. If they have an itch have then tap on the cast over the itch – it will help!

The area around the cast – like the fingers or toes – should look exactly as they do on the other limb. If you notice significant swelling, color changes or temperature differences, contact your doctor immediately. If your child complains that it suddenly “feels funny” or “feels tingly” you need to get to the urgent care or emergency room as it can indicate nerve damage.

When the child is resting, try to prop the casted limb so that it sits above the heart. This will help relieve swelling and reduce pain in the area.

Having a broken bone is no fun for the child or the parent. But it is something that will get better pretty quickly – most kids only need their casts for 4-6 weeks. It’s important to try to go on with your normal activities. A special note for sports injuries: You should still take your child to practices and games if it’s possible. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about what it really means to be a team, as well as sticking with your obligations. Additionally, you do not want your child to be come “scared” of the sport – sort of going with the theory of getting back on the horse.

This is usually a result of the increased amount of time spent outdoor and the increased activity of bees working to pollinate the blooming plants. The effect of a bee sting varies widely from person to person and the level of severity, unfortunately, cannot be known until someone is stung. Being prepared for a sting – bee, wasp, and yellow jacket – is the best way to lessen the effects, as speedy response is the most crucial aspect of bee sting first aid.

Why Can an Insect Sting Be Fatal

For a majority of people, who are not allergic to bee stings, all that is required is minor first aid done at home. However for people with allergies, anaphylactic shock is a very real possibility that must be addressed quickly. Anaphylactic shock is the rapid and over reactive response of your immune system to some substance it deems as dangerous to your well-being. It usually results in massive swelling of the affected area first and then as the toxin spread through the blood stream, it can lead to swelling of the tongue and/or throat, resulting closure of the airways and suffocation. It might also be accompanied by hives – large, red welts, that are often itchy, that show up all over the body.

Come Prepared

If you are going to be going out into nature, you should always bring a well stocked first aid kit, and in that kit you should have some sort of allergy medication with an anti-histamine (EpiPen, Zyrtec, Allegra, Benedryl, etc). You should also have tweezers for removal of the stinger; however a credit card – or other plastic card – can be very effective. It is important to remove the stinger quickly to lessen the amount of toxin absorbed into your skin.

Speedy Response

After the stinger is removed, it is important keep a close eye out for swelling and/or hives as these are signs of possible anaphylactic shock. If the person already suffers from seasonal allergies, it is wise to give a dose of anti-histamine, just in case. For most people, the pain is the only real symptom, for which an anti-inflammatory medication can be used. You can also make a paste of baking soda and water and apply it to the sting for a more localized treatment. If the person has not developed hives, fever/chills or massive swelling within approximately 30 minutes, it is very unlikely that they will.

The number of manufacturers competing in the minivan market has decreased in recent years but the competition is still tough. Virtually all of the current minivans have been updated in the past year, and it is clear that they are trying to listen to what families need in a family hauler.

The Nissan Quest is a strong competitor in the minivan segment and was completely redesigned for the 2011 model year. My family and I spent a week with the Quest as we learned all about the features it has to offer to keep both parents and children happy.

Nissan Quest – Safety

The most important component in a minivan for our family is safety and Nissan has listened to what families think is important to families on many fronts including safety. For example, they have built a van that earned top marks in the IIHS crash tests. Safety features include side curtain head airbags for all three rows as well as torso airbags in the front seats for all trim levels. An interesting safety feature that is included is a sensor for when you are filling the tires with air. On the Quest, the horn will honk once the appropriate pressure has been achieved.

Nissan Quest – Comfort

The Quest excels at interior comfort and at making family road travel enjoyable. We found the 7 person capacity of the Quest to be very comfortable. The front and 2nd row captains chairs are supportive and accommodating. If you have two car seats installed in the 2nd row, then the center console in the 2nd row can be removed for easy access to the 3rd row. The third row feels spacious even for tall passengers because the side walls of the van don’t slope in very much.

Extra Features on the Nissan Quest

My son sure loved the rear entertainment system which features an 11 inch screen and my husband and I certainly appreciated the wireless headsets that allow the children to listen to the movie while parents enjoy their own music or conversations. On the top of the line Quest, the Bose stereo sounded great with a variety of music types that we enjoy. Of the minivans I’ve looked at, including the top of the line Honda Odyssey Touring Elite, I found that the Quest Bose stereo sounds the best.

Available on all trim levles, Nissan’s Advanced Climate Control System does a great job of keeping the van smelling fresh when it detects odors in the air. The system does this in two ways. First, once and odor is recognized outside the van, it shuts down the airflow into the van. Then, the system uses a filter to decrease the allergens in the air and an ion generator to eliminate the odors. This sort of system is usually included in luxury car models and truly made traveling in the Quest more enjoyable, especially when we had take out food or sports gear in the van

Another feature that is very handy and available on some of the trim models is the keyless entry system. This feature is not currently available on all of the Quest’s competitors but it sure makes loading children and groceries a lot easier especially when combined with the power sliding doors.

Cargo Space

Cargo space and storage is always important in a minivan. The Quest approaches these two components a little bit differently than some minivans. First, the Nissan has added covers for the trunk well area that is located behind the 3rd row. The covers are handy for storing items that you may not want visible from outside the van. What’s even better is that these covers can be removed or stowed if you need to use the space for items that won’t fit under the covers. The Quest offers 3rd row and 2nd row seats that fold flat while many minivans have 3rd row seats that stow into the rear well.

There are certainly pros and cons to both systems. The seats that stow into the well require that the well be empty and emptying that area each time the seats need to be stowed can be a hassle. The downside to having the seats folded down is that they occupy some of the cargo space which decreases the overall cargo volume on the Quest. Since the 2nd row seats also fold down instead of having the ability to remove them entirely, it will also decrease on the amount of hauling space available.

Car Seat Installation

As far as car seat installation goes, I found the two captains chairs to be easy for seat installation. I tried a combination of rear facing, forward facing, and booster seats and didn’t have a problem getting acceptable installations. The 3rd row could have more seat incompatibilities because of the location of the buckle stalks. The Quest has the buckle stalks a few inches up above the seat bight. Also important to note, the Quest has three sets of LATCH anchors and and 4 top tethers.

Overall, we enjoyed our week with the Quest. While it has its quirks, it also has plenty features that make travel with family as easy and enjoyable as possible.

One of these concerns involves contact with poison oak, poison ivy and/or poison sumac. Since we spend so many more hours outside, we need to get a refresher each year on what these plants look like, as well as how to care for the resulting rashes.

Know Your Environment

You should take the time to know what grows in and around your home as well as any outdoor areas you frequent in the summer month – like the park, lake, ocean, forest, etc. If you are going camping, you want o make sure that you know what could be in and around your camp site. You also want to make sure that your whole family knows how to identify the plants. One of the oldest tricks in identifying poisonous plants is to memorize the rhyme: “Leaves of Three let them be.” The three most common varieties of poisons plants – ivy, oak and sumac – all have groupings of three leaves on their bushes. If you are ever not sure you should always just stay away. To look at photos of poison ivy/oak/sumac visit: http://poison-ivy.org/. In general poison ivy and oak like open spaces in wooded area while sumac can be found in swamps. If you will be camping or hiking in areas like this, you may consider wearing long pants as the plants are generally low to the ground, or using some sort of protective lotion on exposed skin.

How You Get The Rash

It is not the plant directly that causes most people to break out in rashes of varying severity. It is actually the oil on the leaves, called urushiol, which will cause the skin to break out into bumpy, itchy, red patches when it comes into contact. These bumps can stay small and mildly irritable or they may grow into large nasty blisters. It all depends on the level to which your body reacts to the oils. And since you have no way of knowing if you will not have a reaction prior to your first contact, you should simply avoid it all together. There is no concrete evidence that immunity to these plants is hereditary so do not risk your children because you don’t have reactions to it. Additionally it is possible to spread the oil from one spot on your skin to another, so if you have come in contact, do not touch the area with anything except special soap that will thoroughly remove the oils.

Treatment Options

The most important – but hardest – remedy is to not scratch. This is especially hard for young children. You can resort to taping oven mitts to their hands so that they cannot scratch with their nails. There are a number of topical lotions –most of which are calamine based – that will provide some relief as well. Additionally you should also give an oral anti-histamine, such as Zytrec, Claritin or Bendaryl. This will actually provide relief the fastest and most effectively.

CHARLOTTE, N.C., June 23, 2011 — BRITAX Child Safety, Inc. announced today that it is conducting a voluntary safety recall of the B-NIMBLE® stroller. With young children it is so important to have a pool safety pow-wow before you venture out to the pool. It is even more important if you have a pool on your property. The most important concept to keep in mind when it comes to water safety is that it only takes a second for a child to go under. Here are some tips that will help you keep your children safe around the crystal blue waters. (Keep in mind that these tips are also true for ocean, lake and river play, in addition to the safety concerns of playing in a “live” water environment)

General Pool Safety

Unless your child has demonstrated a solid ability to swim on their own, they should be wearing a life vest. It is also important that you have the right size and fit for your child, and that it is properly fastened. If you are “teaching” your child to swim, you should remove the vest only when you are in the water with them, and within arms reach.

Never multi-task while you are the person watching the children in the pool. Don’t read a book, don’t cook dinner, and don’t talk on your phone. Again it only takes a moment for a child to go under silently and if you are not alert and paying attention your few second window to save them might pass.

No running around the deck of the pool. This is a two fold rule – the deck might be wet and a slip and fall can be disastrous on concrete but also could cause someone to fall into the water.

Public Pool Safety

Review the rules of the particular rules of the pool you are visiting with your children. You also want to point out where the lifeguards are, as well as what parts of the pool are acceptable play areas for your children and their ability.

Do not rely solely on the eyes of the guards on duty. There are all sorts of factors can cause a guard to overlook something. This is especially important if there are a large number of children in the pool.

Feel free to ask the pool staff about their training. You want to be sure that they are up to date, not to mention properly equipped to handle emergency situations.

If you are using a community pool (like at an apartment complex or hotel) and it is posted that no lifeguard is on duty treat the pool as if it was in your home and follow the home pool safety tips.

Home Pool Safety

If you are not out by the pool, your children should not have access to the pool. This mean that the ladder should be removed from an above ground pool or that a gate should be locked leading into an in-ground pool. Just telling your younger children that they can’t be in there without you is not enough, you have to make it so that they are unable to get into the water without your help.

Always clean up all the toys and do not leave any floating on the surface. Children, especially under the age of 5, do not always understand the physics of leaning over the edge to grab a toy. This means that they could slip right into the water without so much as a squeak. So simply remove the temptation by cleaning up all the toys each time you use the pool. This will also prolong the life of your filtration system, as you will not have to worry about items getting stuck in the pump.

If you own a pool, you should seriously consider becoming CPR certified. In most states it is a single Saturday spent at the community center to learn the basic skills for CPR but the knowledge will last a life time and can save a life when properly administrated.

Put together a poolside safety kit. It should have basic first aid items along with a breathing mask. You also want to have a large sturdy set of scissors near the pool – but in a safe place away from little ones. These might become necessary if someone’s hair gets snagged by the pump and/or vacuum or if someone has slipped under the pool cover and you need fast access to them. You should also bring a phone out to the pool with you each time you play, so that you can quickly dial 911 in case of emergency.

Always go over the rules with visitors. And if you are having a pool party, try to stick to the rule of 1 pair of adult eyes for every 5 kids in the water.

Pool Safety extends to the maintenance of your pool. You need to be well educated in terms of the chemicals used to keep your pool clean. It is possible to put the wrong mixtures in, resulting in burning or other skin irritations. Even if you have a professional pool keeper, you should still have a basic knowledge of what’s in your pool and what to look for.

Remember that pool play is super fun and also great exercise – making it the perfect summertime activity. Being alert and aware will help keep the fun going all summer long.

Sunny days come with the added responsibility of making sure that your kid’s skin stays protected from the sun.

My kids have sensitive skin so I have to be careful what I use on them. Neutrogena is one of the few brands of sunscreen that doesn’t make my kids break out in a rash so we’ve primarily stuck with them and a few natural sunscreens (although those are pricier options).

We are religious when it comes to sunscreen. Besides the fact that I have very fair skin (and half my kids seem to have inherited my skin unfortunately), my youngest was born with a birthmark on his head that is pre-cancerous and while it will be removed in the next few years we have to be very careful about his sun exposure until then.

When we’re out in the sun for an extended period of time I try and reapply sunscreen every few hours to avoid sunburn. The Skin Cancer Foun

dation states “reapplication of sunscreen is just as important as putting it on in the first place” and advises to “reapply the same amount every two hours.” During the summer when many of our outdoor activities include water, it makes it tricky to get great sunscreen coverage on wet skin.

The new Neutrogena Wet Skin Sunblock Sprays are specifically designed to adhere to wet skin so you can reapply sunscreen without the hassle of drying your kids off when you are at the pool (or even if you just have sweaty kids). Neutrogena Wet Skin Sunblock Sprays come in SPF options of 30, 50, 85 and an SPF 70 for kids.

We put the Neutrogena Wet Skin Sunblock Spray to the ultimate test and used it on a full day trip to Legoland California to celebrate the opening of their new Splash Zoo in the Legoland Water Park. My kids had a blast and made it through the day without getting sunburned. I, unfortunately, did not. Note to self: be just as careful protecting my own skin from the sun as I am about protecting my kids’ skin.

My kids didn’t complain about sunscreen reapplication since the spray made it so easy. That may sound like a minor victory but keep in mind that I have a 5 year old with aspergers and his sensory issues make sunscreen application torture. While my youngest son loves having sunscreen applied because he gets his skin rubbed, my 5 year old screams until well after I’ve finished putting sunscreen on him. The spray was ideal for him and provided excellent coverage. We have used spray sunscreen in the past but some of them have provided blotchy coverage and with his fair skin I was concerned about that but we didn’t have a problem.

Neutrogena Wet Skin Sunblock Spray is a great tool to have in your summer arsenal and really makes sunscreen application a much simpler process.

Disclosure: I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour campaign by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Neutrogena and received sunscreen and other Neutrogena products as a thank you for my participation.

We also try to teach these habits to our children. But there are a number of common practices that are less then hygienic. Here’s a list of the nine most common unhealthy habits.

Keeping your toothbrush within 24 inches of your toilet. Every time you flush the toilet you send small particles of bacteria into the air. Studies have shown that they land on anything within 24 inches. So you should either put your toothbrush inside the medicine cabinet or at least two feet away.

Using the same kitchen towel to clean your counters and dry your dishes. Lots of people don’t realize just how dirty their counter tops get in a give day and if you wipe them down and then use that towel to dry your dishes you are just transferring those germs from the towel to your clean dishes.

Not cleaning your steering wheel. This is one that very few people do on a regular basis. When you consider all of the things we touch and use while driving, it might occur to you just how icky your steering wheel gets – think of the buttons on the drive-up ATM or the cash handed over and back from the drive-thru or the gas pump or any number of other things. You should wipe down your steering wheel every few days.

Always look before you drink. When eating out, you should always look in your beverage as well as at the glass before you take a sip, and use a straw whenever available. For some reason, drinking glasses are the most common “unclean” items distributed in restaurants (followed by utensils) so always give it a once over before drinking.

Watch how your groceries are bagged. You should always be sure that your raw foods (meats, mainly) are not bagged next to other foods, because cross contamination can occur. This also goes for cleaning products and food items – keep them separate just in case a minor spillage occurs.

Under heating leftovers. When reheating leftovers, you do not want to just “warm it up” you want to get it back up to the temperature you cooked it at. This will help insure that any microbes that might have begun to form are killed before you eat the food item.

Using the same spatula during the process of cooking raw meat and stirring something else. You want to prevent cross-contamination, so you must use a different cooking utensil for your raw meats and the rest of your meal.

Not cleaning your cleaning supplies/tools. You should clean the brushes on your dishbrushes, mops, brooms and vacuums on a regular basis (in relation to how often you use them). Germs can get stuck in them and then you are just spreading them around your home while you are trying to clean it.

“Over” Cleaning things. While many germs are harmful to our health, there are still forms of bacteria that are not only good but necessary for our survival. So “bleaching” your entire world is too far on the other end of the spectrum. For example, washing your hands too often can actually remove the extra layers of skin we need to prevent infection when we do come in contact with containments.
