Belt fit is the most important component of a booster, and The First Years has really designed a great belt path on the B570 Pathway booster to ensure good fit for many children. This booster is designed to be used from 30-100 lbs. The B570 is a top rated booster by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) for ease of use and I can see why they chose this seat for that award.
Safety Features of the B570 Booster
When choosing a booster seat for your child, you first want to ensure that the booster belt path fits your child. A correctly fitting booster will place the shoulder belt across the shoulder in the middle of the shoulder between the outside of the shoulder and the neck and the lap belt should lie across the tops of the thighs. The lap belt portion lying nice and low ensures that in a crash, the belt won’t place the impact on the abdominal area.
The B570 has guides to help keep the belt over the tops of the thighs and these also help prevent the belt from riding up above the thighs. In addition, new this year, the B570 has a special sliding adjuster on the shoulder belt guide that can move up to 1.5 inches to help tailor the shoulder belt path fit to each individual child. I found that the guides and the sliding adjuster at the shoulder really made a huge difference in the fit of this booster for my child.
The B570 has also has a nice deep headrest which is great for possible added protection in a side impact collision. The seat is tested to the Australian side impact testing standards which are supposed to be the most stringent. The booster also has a self adjusting back to help it fit snugly into more cars.
Functional Features for Moms
A few more features that might be very valuable to moms with booster riding children are the removable cup holders and the LATCH that can hold the booster in the seat. First, the B570 has two cup holders that can be adjusted to fit flush with the booster or can be moved out for easier access.
These cup holders can also be removed so that they can be cleaned. I know that once my son has been drinking smoothies or juice in the car, that the cup holders become sticky messes. I loved being able to remove them so that I can clean them without having to remove the entire seat. This booster also can be connected to the car with LATCH. The LATCH is meant to hold the booster in place when the seat is not occupied. Without such LATCH connectors, a booster should be buckled even when there is no child in the seat. Now, moms and dads don’t have to stop and buckle the seat in even if their child should forget to buckle the seat in on the way out the door to school.
The B570 is a great choice if you are moving the seat from car to car frequently since it has a one-handed fold. Once the seat is folded it is less cumbersome to carry and takes up less space when storing or when traveling.
Overall, I am very impressed with the B570 Pathway booster. I find the belt fit with this booster to be excellent for my child in my car. It is clear the The First Years has really aimed to make this booster compatible with many children.
Of course, before purchasing a booster, it is crucial to ensure that the booster fits your child well in your car as well since fit can vary from child to child and car to car. Furthermore, I was also pleased with the various added features of the seat from the side impact protection to the removable cup holders. This booster is one seat we will certainly be using frequently.
