Pretend play activities are so great for a child’s social and emotional development and kids love participating in pretend play but sometimes they could use a little help to jump start their imagination (other times they’ll happily play with a box for hours on end).
The Pretend & Play Ice Cream Shop from Learning Resources is a fantastic set for encouraging pretend play and the set has some amazing details that moms will love.
I have 2 preschoolers at the moment and while they love playing with their toy kitchen, sometimes they need a little bit of direction. The Pretend & Play Ice Cream Shop comes with some great tools to get them started.
This set comes with an apron so kids can take turns being the “employee” and there’s a menu (complete with photo menu options for non-readers) that the “customer” can use to order from.
One of the things that I love about this set is there are so many different ways to play with it. We’re homeschooling this year so I’ve really been looking for ways to occupy my preschoolers while I do more advanced activities with my oldest son without resorting to parking them in front of the TV or computer — although ironically, my 8 year old loves to jump in and play whenever I pull this out so this isn’t too much of a help for finding some one-on-one school time. I don’t really mind though because my 8 year old likes to create a special menu and by having him write down what is on his special menu and what each ice cream treat has in it, this becomes a writing activity.
The details in this set are adorable. My favorite is the chocolate sauce bottle. When you pour it upside down, a brown string falls out through the opening making it look like a stream of chocolate sauce.
The ice cream scoop has a suction cup on it so you can really use it to scoop the ice cream out of the carton. A button on the scoop releases the suction so you can place the ice cream on a cone.
