Make Swimming Lessons a Priority
Ironically, I’d looked into swimming lessons just before my daughter’s accident.
At the time, I wasn’t sure how to fit them into my budget. Looking back, I could have cut out other things in order to pay for swimming lessons. Maybe eaten out a few less times that month? Taken on an extra project?
If you are worried about paying for swimming lessons we have some tips for how to pay for swimming lessons when you can’t afford it.
She was barely two so she still wouldn’t have been a great swimmer (and even kids who are strong swimmers still need supervision) but I might have felt a little less guilt.
Swimming is such an important safety skill. Not being a strong swimmer can very easily turn into a life or death situation.
Start working on basic safety skills. Those are more urgent than learning the perfect strokes. Swimming lessons aren’t a one-and-done kind of thing either. I had my boys in lessons monthly for a full year before I felt confident about their ability in the pool.
You can work on swimming skills with your kids yourself too, just be sure that they have your undivided attention. With my twins now ready to start learning basic water safety, I know I can’t watch them both at the same time so I plan on working with them one at a time.
We took my daughter back for swimming lessons last summer. It was a bit rough. She still can’t swim but we are working on it. We are making swimming lessons a priority and will keep her in lessons until she’s a strong swimmer.
I’m grateful every single day that our story had a happy ending. Accidents happen too quickly. Not everyone is able to spot the signs of drowning. It only takes a minute of distraction for something to go wrong.
Be safe this summer. Remember that you ALWAYS have to be alert when kids are near water.
What are you doing to keep your kids safe around water this summer?
