I’ve fielded a lot of criticism for that but the fact is that he is not safe in a seat belt alone. Every few months we run the 5 point test on him and he just isn’t there yet. The belt hits him in all the wrong places and in an accident he would not be protected. And I’m not really okay with that.
More importantly, neither is he. Since he’s kind of on the edge of being ready to move out of a booster, we’ve laid all the information out there for him. And it’s his choice to stay in his booster.
I’ve been lucky that he’s on board with staying in a booster until he’s ready to move out, but it does help that he’s riding in a comfortable seat.
The Diono Monterey is a high back booster with an adjustable width back that is perfect for older kids who aren’t quite ready for a seat belt. Since it can be used for kids up to 120 pounds you can easily keep older kids in a booster for as long as you need to.
My 9 year old isn’t even 60 pounds yet so I doubt he’ll get anywhere close to the maximum weight before he’s proportionally ready to move into just using the seatbelt.
The back is removable, but unless you have an issue fitting the seat in a tight spot (like between two other car seats), I’d recommend just leaving it on. For one thing, it’s great for added protection. It also makes a great headrest for long trips and prevents kids from slumping over if they fall asleep.
The seat bottom also has extra length for additional leg support so it’s just as comfortable, if not more, than sitting in the car without a booster.
A few weeks ago we took off on a 10 hour road trip. With 4 kids.
I know . . . I know. I saw you cringe.
I had two kids riding in Diono Monterey boosters and while I heard plenty of “are we there yet? and “I have to go to the bathroom”, I didn’t have one complaint about them being uncomfortable being in their seats.
Actually, it was the opposite of that. My 6 year old was ecstatic to be riding in one of Diono’s latest colors, their bright blue, because that is currently his favorite color. It’s amazing what a difference a fun color can make.
Diono has some great color choices in their Monterey so kids can really get a chance to express their own personality.
