If you’ve ever tried fitting 3 car seats side by side in your car, you know what a nightmare it can be. Most car seats are too wide to be installed in a 3 across configuration so many parents take their children out of car seats too early or move them into booster seats before they are safe in one. The Radian XTSL from Sunshine Kids, at only 17 inches across, is one of the narrowest car seats on the market, but it’s also one of the safest.
We recently fit 3 Radian XTSL car seats in the 100% Electric Nissan Leaf , which is a 5 door hatchback. We’re doubtful that any other car seats would have fit 3 across in that car and even 2 car seats and a booster would have been difficult because you’d constantly be struggling to reach the seat belt every time you buckled your child in.
The Radian is rated for kids up to 80 lbs. using a 5 point harness. I love the high weight limit because I’m a huge proponent of keeping kids in car seats for as long as possible. I know many parents who move kids out of car seats (and boosters) when they are far too young because they are worried their child will be teased or because there child doesn’t want to ride in a car seat any longer but I was told by a car seat safety expert that she rarely sees children under 10 who can safely ride without being in a booster seat. After being in a rollover accident and seeing just how much car seats do to keep kids safe, my 7 year old son asked to move from a booster seat back into a 5 point harness. Since he’s still well below the 80 lb. weight limit on the Radian XTSL, I suspect he’ll be comfortable in the seat for a long time, especially since despite the narrow footprint of the seat, the interior is very roomy.
Safety is always the #1 priority when choosing a car seat and fortunately, the Radian XTSL is one of the safest that you can buy. Sunshine Kids is so confident about the safety of their seats that they are the ONLY car seat manufacturer that posts their crash tests for consumers. During the ABC Kids Expo we were able to see a cross section of the Radian frame and it was impressive. Radian car seats have a steel reinforced frame and deep head and side walls to keep kids safe in the event of a car accident.
